Waiting For Daw Suu Kyi

Waiting For Daw Suu Kyi
Ninglun Hanghal

AS AUNG SAN SUU KYI TRAVELS to India to deliver the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Lecture in mid-November, there are many in this country who are waiting to catch a glimpse of her - women like Mya Mya Aye, who had fled Burma in 1995 and has been living in Delhi ever since. As the political situation at home changes, Mya Mya Aye's hopes of going back home are also rising and Aung San Suu Kyi's visit seems to symbolise that change. Mya Mya Aye is not alone. As the arrival of Daw Suu Kyi draws nearer, the Burmese community in Delhi is busy preparing to greet her after a gap of over 40 long years.

"I am praying to Buddha that I will get to meet her…If I meet her I will ask when can we come back?"
