11-6-2008 Dalai Lama donates to Myanmar cyclone victims

THE TIBETAN spiritual leader in exile, His Highness the Dalai Lama has donated a total of Rs 5.5 lakhs for relief and reconstruction work for victims of Cyclone Nargis, in Myanmar.

Over 1, 34,000 people perished and went missing while 2.5 million were rendered homeless after the killer cyclone lashed Irrawaddy [wiki] and Rangoon [wiki] division in Myanmar. Victims of the natural disaster are still in desperate need of food, drinking water, medicines and shelter. The onset of monsoons has only made matters worse.

The Nobel Peace Laureate, Dalai Lama, was among the first to have extended a helping hand. Soon after the world learned of the terrible tragedy in Myanmar, the Dalai Lama donated of Rs 50,000 to help cyclone victims. He made a further donation of Rs 500,000 yesterday.

The donation was received on behalf of the cyclone affected people of the country by Dr Tint Swe, a minister in Burma’s government in exile the National Coalition Government of Union of Burma (NCGUB). This is encouraging for the people of Burma, said Swe to the Myanmar media in exile.
